Inspiration and beginnings
In those early days, what were some of the most significant challenges you faced and how did you navigate them?
In the early days, one of my biggest hurdles was managing life with a heart condition. Imagine trying to dance through life with a heart that had its own unpredictable rhythm! It affected everything from my physical activities to my emotional state, making me feel like the odd one out at times. But hey, who wants to be ordinary anyway?
I decided to turn this challenge into my superpower. Embracing my unique identity and connecting with a community of fabulous, like-minded folks became my secret sauce for resilience. Instead of letting it hold me back, I used it as a springboard to champion self-expression and create safer spaces for everyone.
Through this journey, I learned that being true to yourself is the best way to live, and lifting each other up is what truly makes life sparkle. So, I took those early struggles and turned them into a mission to promote LGBTQIA+ culture and identity, ensuring everyone has a place to shine just as they are.
Could you share the pivotal moment or experience that ignited your journey into LGBTQIA+ advocacy and activism?
Absolutely! The pivotal moment that kick-started my journey into LGBTQIA+ advocacy and activism was like a scene from a dramatic yet fabulous movie. Picture this: it was 2012, and I had just landed in Berlin, a city pulsating with vibrant, unapologetic self-expression. Walking through the streets, I was inspired by how freely people expressed their identities – it was like the city itself had a heartbeat of authenticity.
That experience was a game-changer for me. It helped me align my queerness, my unique abilities shaped by my heart condition, and my passion for activism. I realized the immense power of visibility and the importance of creating safer spaces where everyone feels as free and accepted as I did in Berlin.
It was a blend of this revelation and my personal experiences that fueled my mission. I knew firsthand the importance of feeling seen and supported, so I committed to championing self-expression and building inclusive communities. From that moment on, it was all about amplifying voices, celebrating diversity, and ensuring everyone has a platform to be their true selves. That Berlin trip was the spark that lit the fire, and I’ve been dancing to this rhythm of advocacy ever since!
From “8 Open-Heart Surgery Survivor” to an icon and referent? How has the process and evolution been?
Well, if you’d told me that surviving eight open-heart surgeries would be my ticket to becoming an icon and referent, I’d have probably laughed out loud – then asked for a sparkly outfit to match the title! The journey has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, but it’s been one fabulous and transformative adventure.
Starting with those heart surgeries, each one taught me resilience and the importance of embracing every beat of life. It was like each scar became a badge of honor, a reminder that I’m here to make a difference. Along the way, I discovered that my unique experiences could be a beacon for others, showing that no matter what challenges we face, we can rise and shine.
Transitioning from a medical miracle to a lifestyle curator, digital content creator, and LGBTQIA+ advocate was all about finding my voice and using it to inspire others. Berlin in 2012 was a huge turning point, where the city’s heartbeat of self-expression helped me align my queerness, my different abilities, and my activism into a clear, intentional path.
The evolution has been filled with learning, laughter, and a lot of love. It’s about creating safer spaces, celebrating our true selves, and showing that authenticity is the real key to living a fabulous life. And through it all, I’ve realized that being an icon isn’t about perfection – it’s about being proudly, unapologetically yourself. So here I am, scars and all, ready to keep shining and lifting others up along the way!

Why did you decide to move to Barcelona, and how have you found the city in terms of creative opportunities?
Growing up in Miami/Fort Lauderdale, the sun, blue skies, and ocean were the lifeblood of my happiness. There’s just something magical about the water and the warm sunshine that makes everything feel right. After experiencing the creative pulse of NYC and Berlin, and then living in Chicago, Mexico City, and a bunch of other spots, I really embraced my nomadic lifestyle. The next chapter was finding a place to call home that could offer the same sunny vibes and connection to the ocean.
Barcelona caught my eye, and once I started traveling there, I knew I’d found something special. The city’s beautiful weather and sparkling sea felt like a slice of home, but it was the wonderful people I met that truly sealed the deal. Their warmth and openness made Barcelona feel like the right place to settle down, at least for now.
However, while Barcelona has been fantastic on a personal level, providing me with a sense of self and fulfillment, it hasn’t quite matched up creatively. The opportunities for the type of work I do are limited here, but the city’s charm and the incredible connections I’ve made more than make up for it. Barcelona has become my sunny, seaside sanctuary where I can thrive personally, even if I have to look elsewhere for creative pursuits.
Role of art, creativity, and performance nowadays
In what ways do you believe performance art uniquely contributes to societal change and the advancement of LGBTQIA+ rights?
Performance art holds a unique and powerful role in driving societal change and advancing LGBTQIA+ rights. It’s a dynamic medium that transcends traditional boundaries, blending creativity, emotion, and activism to create impactful experiences that resonate deeply with audiences.
One of the most significant ways performance art contributes to societal change is by providing a platform for voices that are often marginalized. Through storytelling, dance, theater, and other forms of performance, artists can highlight LGBTQIA+ experiences, challenges, and triumphs in ways that foster empathy and understanding. This visibility is crucial in challenging stereotypes and breaking down prejudices.
Moreover, performance art has the ability to engage people on an emotional level, creating a visceral connection that can inspire action. By witnessing the struggles and joys of LGBTQIA+ individuals through art, audiences are more likely to support and advocate for equal rights and inclusion. It’s a powerful tool for raising awareness and sparking conversations that might not happen otherwise.
In addition, performance art often creates safer spaces where LGBTQIA+ individuals can express themselves authentically and unapologetically. These spaces become sanctuaries for self-expression and community building, reinforcing the importance of identity and acceptance.
In essence, performance art is a catalyst for change. It challenges norms, elevates voices, and connects people on a deeply human level. By showcasing the rich tapestry of LGBTQIA+ experiences, performance art not only entertains but also educates and mobilizes, making it an invaluable force in the fight for equality and human rights.
